Here are my thoughts on Star Wars 7.

Pros:
There were a lot of jokes, and they were better than the jokes in the old movies.
Minority and female characters held more prominent roles than in the previous movies.

Cons:
The story line was extremely similar to the original one.
Kylo Ren came across as weak and unable to control himself. I found Kylo interesting, as a combination of traits of young Anakin and older Darth Vader, but he just wasn't compelling as the primary villain. his wouldn't have been such an issue if the other villain were fleshed out more.

Yes, it was good to see a strong female character, and a minority have more screen presence. Is it possible that Finn is Lando's kid?

I can agree that Ren was not a strong enough character or compelling enough like Vader was. Obviously his story is basically the same. Good, to bad, to eventually redeem himself. Yawn.

The big questions that we really want to know is, is Rey Luke's child?

***Spoilers**

That's certainly my biggest question. It's the most obvious possibility. For a while, I was trying to figure out whether Rey was Leia and Han's kid, but as the movie went on, it became increasingly likely that she's Luke's. I have other questions too. I'm curious about the relationship between the First Order, the New Republic, and the Resistance, and just what the First Order is. Star Wars traditionally has only one nation controlling the whole galaxy, be it the Empire or the Old Republic. But for there to be a resistance that's allied with the New Republic against the First Order, that strongly implies that the First Order and the Republic are two separate nations, rather than the First Order being a group fighting a rebellion against the New Republic. Whatever it is, it's slightly more complex than Star Wars' usual single galactic government and single group of rebels fighting against it. I really wish they'd clarified what it is.
And there's another huge thing that they barely touched on, and left me confused. When the First Order guys talked about their new, bigger Death Star, they said it was going to destroy the capital of the Republic soon. Then the bigger Death Star shot a few laser beams into space and seemed to blow up some place. It wasn't clear if this was the capital planet that was blown up, or if they blew up some other place and were planning to attack the capitol world later. The weird thing is that this wasn't even mentioned again during the whole movie, even though it clearly was supposed to be a major plot point. It left me really confused.

It certainly is possible that Finn is Lando's kid. I hope he isn't. I don't think we need another offspring character carrying on an established character's legacy. Kylo is one such character. Rey probably is. I don't see a way the story would work if she didn't inherit her super force powers from somebody in the story. I'd prefer that Finn be unrelated to anyone we've seen before. That said, I do hope they show that his parents had an interesting story of their own.

Anyone hyped up for the Episode 8? I can't wait.

Definitely looking forward to it!

I sure hope That One Guy lives through it. Because "Hero's Mentor and Possibly Father" is like the worst conceivable job description in this type of story.

Ok... I may be in the slight minority, but I feel these movies just are terrible Star Wars movies? Like, Rey, maybe one of the worst characters in movie history. (Sure that's a bold statement. And maybe an exaggeration. But she's up there. )

Episode 8, was just... So, so bad.

I fell asleep during Episode 8, and I saw it during daylight hours. That said, while I find Rey to be a bit bland as a character, she's no more bland than Luke or Leia or Obi Wan. And her growing up salvaging items from a junkyard is interesting. I'd like to see more of her backstory.

Episode 8 was kind of boring for much of it. Not as much as Rogue One. Rogue one is a snorefest until like the last hour of the movie. It's not so much that Rey is bland that gets me. It's just that. Well, she's not believable as a character. She is OP to be OP, and it makes no sense, and isn't something that draws me in. Luke drew you in, because he was believable, and you could relate to him. Even as powerful as Anakin was, he had his short comings, and failings... But not Rey. Rey manages to be good at, and better than anyone else, with everything she does. Never seen a lightsaber before, well, now I'm beating people that trained with one for a time with it. All while not chopping my own body parts off. Never knew I was connected to the force. Now I'm more powerful using it, than this other force sensitive person that had training with it. Never used the force before, but now I am moving entire mountains with it. Even Luke struggled with it, and he was the son of one of the most powerfully recorded force uses on record.

So that is why, to me, Rey is one of the worst written characters in media.

That's true. It bothers me how easily things come to her, and after watching the last movie, I'm even more confused about how she got all those powers.

I don't know, I mean Luke trained with his lightsaber for all of a single trip with Kenobi, and a week, maybe two with Yoda learning the force on Dagobah (but specifically not lightsaber usage).
From that he was able to go one on one with Vader in Empire. He lost, but still survived. Then watched Yoda die and all of a sudden he's a Jedi Knight and able to fight Vader on an equal footing.

Keep in mind this was Vader. He wiped the jedi out. He spent the previous umpteen years of his life systematically hunting and killing the handful of Jedi who were strong or smart enough to survive the clone wars.

Compared to him, Kylo Ren's a whiny little tosser trying to get by on the notoriety of his grandfather, a five year olds anger management, a poorly made saber and a shiny mask. He throws tantrums like a little kid and has no control of himself or the force despite his natural talent at it.

But this is Star Wars, where narrative causality is practically a character in and of itself (though it goes by The Force here). It let's a youth fresh off the moisture farm infiltrate the largest, most heavily guarded Imperial facility in the known galaxy, walk into it's high detention center and then walk out with a high value prisoner without taking a scratch.

It's cool if you think Rey is getting too powerful too quickly or whatever, but consider that all of that's been part of the story since the first movie.

Bare in mind though that in Empire, Vader knew who he was. He knew that Luke was his son. So he was holding back on him. He was never trying to kill him. He was always trying to turn his son to the dark side, or at least get his son to join him to over throw the emperor. That had always been Anakin's goal since Revenge of the Sith. Ruling the galaxy. He thought he could do it with Padme. Which he couldn't... He probably also hoped that he may have been able to turn Obi Wan to his side.. But then he realized he couldn't and tried to kill him instead. Yet he failed. It's not until what 19 years later that he tried to again. This time he fought to a standstill and Obi Wan let him kill him.

Luke only really bested Vader after a long fight, and being full of rage and anger.

However you don't mention is that there is time lapses in Luke's story. Between A new hope and Empire Strikes back is about three years. Between Empire and Return of the Jedi is one year. So Luke has three-four years to train. Granted he had to train on his own. But he had plenty of time to learn to use a light saber.

Between Force Awakens, and Episode 8, is about 5 minutes. As episode 8 picks up right where 7 ends.

Kylo Ren is not that much different than Anakin. Anakin was all of that. Whiny kid. Just that, episode 7/8 are the same plots/devices just magnified.

I guess we can just agree to say that Star Wars makes no sense.
